Johnny Cade Dies From Results of Church Fire

By Anna Vander Pol, New York Times

Tulsa, Oklahoma October 16, 1960

Johnny Cade’s death was reported on Tuesday, October 8th on Jay mountain. His death was caused by his heroic actions in a church fire. Before all of this happened Johnny murdered Bob Sheldon back in his hometown. Johnny and his friend Ponyboy ran away to a church to hide from the police.

They got to the church and stayed there for about a week, then left for an hour or two. When they arrived back to the church they realized it was on fire.

Johnny and Ponyboy instantly went into the church to save the kids that were in the church for a field trip. “We must have dropped a lighted cigarettes or something.” ,said Ponyboy

Once they rescued all of the kids in the Church Ponyboy made it out of the church with minor injuries. Dallas went into the church to get Johnny out of there and he broke his right arm. Johnny ended up with fatal injuries from part of the ceiling falling on top of him.

Ponyboy and Dallas were released from the hospital soon after this because their injuries were minor.

Days later Ponyboy and Dallas were escorted to the hospital by the police to see Johnny. Once they arrived to the hospital Johnny was in critical condition. They then had some last few words and eventually saw Johnny take his very last breath. “Oh, damnit, Johnny, don’t die, please don’t die.” ,said Dallas.

In the end Johnny did some serious crimes, but Johnny risked his life for kids he didn’t even know. He got the punishment he would have received from killing Bob Sheldon, but he got it from saving children’s lives.
